The tradition of iconography or sacred art was carried out in Spanish Colonial New Mexico by santeros who painted icons or local churches and families.
These artists painted with home-made paints on hand-prepared wooden panels (retables). The images they painted resembled the ions of he Orthodox Churches (Greek Byzantium and Russia), and were characterized by the lack o f perspective which the Renaissance had brought to European iconography.
Inspired mainly by the santeros of the classical period of New Mexican iconography (1785-1850), Carol has blende the ancient tradition of encaustic art with the vernacular or people’s art of Colonial Nuevo Méjico.
The result is a truly unique and rare art form that produces a new and energetic portrayal of the sacred art of the santero tradition.
